The University of York is leading an innovative research programme called BETTER: Behaviour, Environment and Technology in Tiredness and Excessive Risk
This research looks to examine the role which disturbed sleep plays in enhancing harm caused through gambling, and also the beneficial role healthy sleep can play in promoting sustained recovery after experiencing harm.
The research team are looking for several individuals based in or around York, Humber, or NE England who have their own experience of harmful gambling and who also experienced broken or inconsistent sleep patterns coinciding with harmful gambling engagement.
The selected individuals will help the project by forming a Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) which will lend experiential insight and leadership to coproduction of research into this area.
Time commitment will be four virtual LEAP meetings over the duration if the project (April 2026 – April 2027) but may include opportunity to participate in other related activities including in-person programme events hosted in York.
One area of research will be how exposure to harsh or unusual environmental factors, such as spending time in prison as a result of crime committed to fund gambling, contribute or impact the role of sleep in personal wellbeing.
Participants will be remunerated for their time at standard NIHR Involvement Rates (https://www.nihr.ac.uk/about-us/who-we-are/policies-and-guidelines/payment-guidance-researchers-and-professionals) and will have travel costs paid for when attending in-person events.
To apply to join the LEAP please email info@glenetwork.org including the phrase “BETTER LEAP” in the subject title and giving:
